What to Expect From Your Root Canal

Discover what to expect from your next root canal!

A root canal is a procedure used to treat a tooth that has been severely damaged by infection due to trauma or an especially deep cavity. While the procedure has commonly been associated with pain and discomfort, educating yourself beforehand can help alleviate any symptoms of stress.  Here’s what you can typically expect your next root canal to involve:

Before the Procedure

If you’re visiting the dentist for the first time in a long time, he or she will take a set of X-rays as part of your full oral health evaluation.  Your dentist will be able to determine any procedures you may need, including any root canals.  If you’re just going in for your regular dental check-up and your dentist notices an irregularity, he may take an x-ray of the specific area.  From these x-rays, your dentist will be able to tell exactly where the infection is and what tooth needs the root canal.

The Root Canal Process

The first visit:

  1. Your dentist will use a needle to numb the area around the affected tooth.  Pinching and/or burning are common, but only last a few seconds until the anesthetic takes effect.
  2. Using very small and highly specialized equipment, your dentist will completely clean out all of the infected pulp.  They may also put an antimicrobial solution in the chamber to kill any remaining bacteria.
  3. Once the empty chamber is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and dried, it will be filled.  This typically uses a special material like gutta percha, which is extremely similar to rubber.  The opening is then closed with a temporary filling while you wait for the permanent crown.

The second visit:

A few weeks after the actual root canal procedure, your dentist will place a permanent crown or something similar over the natural tooth.  They may need to place a small support post inside the root chamber to provide the crown with more support and stability.

Aftercare and the Long-Term

Good dental hygiene is the best way to care for your root canal.  Brushing and flossing at least twice a day and regular dental cleanings can make your root canal last a lifetime.  Your dentist may also want to schedule follow-up x-rays just to make sure everything is taken care of.
