What to Do After a Tooth Extraction Procedure

What to Do After a Tooth Extraction Procedure

A tooth extraction might not be as big a deal as other dental procedures you could have done, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore any advice to rest and let your body recover.

If you’ve had constant mouth pain, it might not be because of what you expect. A root canal will stop the pain from an infected nerve, but that might not be the only reason for your pain. Receding gums will eventually cause you to lose teeth, but after you’ve gotten a tooth pulled, what should you do next?

Relax

Right after you’ve had your tooth extracted, you need to relax. A tooth extraction might not be as big a deal as other dental procedures you could have done, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore any advice to rest and let your body recover. Make sure you keep your head elevated to prevent the possibility of excessive bleeding.

Don’t Rinse

Although you will want to, don’t rinse right away. Give it at least a full day before doing this. That will give your empty tooth socket some time to heal up after the tooth extraction procedure. When you eat something, avoid using that side of your mouth to chew. Also, don’t nudge it with your tongue, even though it will be an odd sensation to feel a tooth that’s not there anymore. After all, if you do this, you run the risk of infecting the area, which will only cause you more pain in the long run.

Be Careful When Brushing

After you eat, however, you should still brush your remaining teeth. Doing this will be tricky, so be extra careful. Don’t bump the area where the extracted tooth was, so you can avoid pain and possible infection.

How to Help It

One way to help it is to keep your mouth as clean as possible. Be even more careful about using floss and mouthwash when you need them. Again, avoid the temptation to rinse for the first day or so after your extraction. After the day is up, try some salt water. The salt will help your mouth heal. Using your normal mouthwash will still be too intense, which means that you should continue the salt water treatment for the next week or so. You can stop once your dentist tells you it’s okay to do so. Make sure you stick to a healthier diet free of sweets and make sure you take some Vitamin C supplements to help your mouth finish healing.
