3 Reasons to Start Using Mouthwash

Unless mouthwash is already part of your oral care routine, you probably don’t think about it all that much, and when you do, it’s never as anything more than a breath-freshener.

Unless mouthwash is already part of your oral care routine, you probably don’t think about it all that much, and when you do, it’s never as anything more than a breath-freshener. Mouthwash is actually so much more than that, however. It is a valuable tool in the fight for better mouth health, and it is also an easy one to add to your arsenal, no matter your age. You should consider adding mouthwash to your shopping list and your daily dental routine today for better dental visits in the future.

It Improves Oral Health

The biggest reason to start using mouthwash is to get better oral health. Mouthwash can help reduce gingivitis and plaque build-up. Plaque contributes to tooth decay, and gingivitis is the start of gum disease. By simply adding a minute of mouthwash swishing after flossing and brushing, you can help prevent these two major dental issues. When your mouthwash has fluoride, you can even help restrengthen your tooth enamel. Fluoride requires a slightly longer rinse time, but in the end, it is time well spent.

It Comes In Many Varieties

It can actually be overwhelming to choose a mouthwash because there are so many varieties available. Generally, mouthwash will be either antiseptic (it kills germs), fluoride (it deposits fluoride to rebuild enamel(, or cosmetic (it only freshens breath). There are also mouthwashes, usually marketed to kids, that have softer flavors (like bubblegum) and less sting or burn. These are intended only for kids over six (mouthwash may harm younger teeth) but if you’re looking for an alternative to the burn of traditional mouthwash they may also work for you. Often, these types are also fitted with a special top that allows only the correct dose each time (to help kids learn the proper amount to use). This can be a great way to introduce kids to this valuable oral health tool.

It Is Easy To Find

Perhaps the best thing about adding mouthwash to your oral care routine is that it is so easy to do. You don’t need a special product or prescription for it. You should discuss the best type for your needs with your dentist, but after that, you will likely be able to find it in just about any grocery store. There are even mini travel size bottles available so you can take it with you on the road (or simply try it before you buy a big bottle).
