3 Tips for Getting a Whiter Smile

3 Tips for Getting a Whiter Smile

Talk to your dentist about how you can whiten your smile!

There are hundreds of products on the market that promise a whiter smile in a matter of weeks, and everyone seems to have their own idea of what keeps teeth white. Ultimately, though, your dentist will be able to give you the best tools for keeping those pearly whites looking their best! In the meantime, try some of these tips!

Keep the Stains Away

The most important way to keep your teeth a beautiful shiny white is to prevent teeth stains from occurring in the first place. As you get older, the outer layer of protective enamel on your teeth may start to wear away. The layer underneath your enamel is called dentin, and dentin is naturally yellow in color.  Whether you’re whitening at home or with a dentist, it is important to avoid food and beverages that can stain teeth and put enamel in danger.

No More Cigarettes

If you are one of the millions of Americans that can’t seem to kick a smoking habit, a bright white smile may seem like an impossibility. Smoking is one of the biggest enemies of a bright, white smile. Smoking cigarettes forms brown stains that grow in the grooves and pits present in your tooth enamel. These stains are almost impossible to remove by brushing and flossing. The frequency and amount of time you smoke will just increase the staining.

Food and Drinks

Your diet also plays a large role in the color of your teeth. If you find that your teeth aren’t as white as you want them to be, take a look at what you’re ingesting. How can you tell if something is going to stain your teeth? There are so many foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. Coffee is a major offender of tooth staining. Other drinks like tea, cola or darker colored sodas, and fruit juices can leave behind serious stains on your smile. Whitening products can temporarily counteract these stains, but they will continue to develop slowly and increase over time if you don’t change your drinking or brushing habits.
