Irregular Tooth Growth

Irregular Tooth Growth

Just like fingerprints, no two mouths are exactly the same.

Do you feel like your teeth don’t really fit right in your mouth? If you’re constantly feeling irritated due to the way these teeth bump against your gums or your tongue, then it’s time to do something about them. Just like fingerprints, no two mouths are exactly the same. If the way your teeth are situated or shaped is making you uncomfortable, talk to your dentist to find out your treatment options.

How Teeth Grow

First of all, we need to look at how teeth tend to grow. Not all teeth are created equal. Occasionally, your teeth will come in and grow in odd ways. For example, have you ever heard your dentist mention that your wisdom teeth are impacted? This means that when they finally appear, they won’t be nice and straight. Likewise, the pointy parts of your teeth can occasionally develop talon cusps, which get their name from the fact that they look like eagle talons. Luckily, these can be removed by simple dental procedures where they are shaved down and then given a sealant. You might be self-conscious about your crooked, gapped, or sharp teeth. But these all have relatively easy solutions.

Treating Sharp Teeth

Contouring is one common way to treat sharp teeth. It evens out the uneven teeth enamel and it is also a lot gentler than it sounds. Just in case your teeth have been chipped or broken (maybe from an accident while playing sports) bonding is another option. In the bonding procedure, some special dental resin is used to fix the part of the tooth that is missing.

One possible downside to this option is that even though the dental bonding is recolored to match your natural tooth, after a while this color treatment will start to fade away. You can also choose a dental veneer, which are replacement teeth made of porcelain that is inserted over your existing teeth The traditional veneer needs to have some of your tooth enamel removed so it can fit better, though. Sometimes, even veneers won’t be enough. Instead, your only choice is to have a dental implant put in; you can even have a bridge if you need one.
