Dental Crowns and Veneers: What’s The Difference?

Dental crowns and veneers, shown here, can fix cosmetic dental issues.

Dental crowns and veneers are two popular cosmetic dentistry options. While both are protective covers that go over the outside of your teeth, they have some crucial differences. If you are unsure whether a crown or veneer is best for your teeth, read on to learn about the similarities these procedures offer as well as what makes them different.

How are Crowns and Veneers Similar?

Dental crowns and veneers are both thin and made mostly of very durable porcelain. They can be made to match your existing tooth shade or can be made brighter to enhance your smile. You may consider both to fix several cosmetic issues, including:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Yellow, stained, or discolored teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • A change in your tooth appearance or smile

What Dental Crowns Can Do For You

Crowns are a “cap” covering the top part of your tooth or everything above the gum line. Teeth have to be prepped for there to be enough room for a crown to fit.

Crowns are used when your dentist is trying to save the tooth structure and provide extra stability. Because crowns encase the top part of a tooth, they are used when there is significant decay, and a filling would not suffice. Crowns are also used if you have had a root canal on that tooth and need to seal the top.

Crowns can be placed on top of a dental implant and can be used in place of fillings or veneers if you grind or clench your teeth. Crowns are much less likely to pop off, making them a good alternative to veneers or fillings.

What Veneers Can Do For You

Think of veneers as “faces” that cover the front surface of a tooth. Some veneers require very little preparation, meaning that the underlying tooth does not need to be taken away to make room for veneer material.

Because veneers cover the front of your tooth, they are used for many of the cosmetic issues referred to above but without requiring shaving or drilling any part of the tooth. Veneers are great for those with substantial existing teeth that do not have decay. If you want to correct tooth gaps or discoloration, veneers can be an easy solution.
